Today we revised the main points of Consuming Kids and considered how to plan an essay on the question: "Advertising to children is not as bad as people think" Discuss. In a discussion essay it is important to show an awareness of both sides of the argument. We noted some possible points to make on both sides (see the document linked here or below). Today we discussed how important and useful it is to know a range of words to use instead of "said". In a discussion essay you need to use many different peoples' opinions. You can introduce their opinions in a number of ways other than "Mr Blahblah said...". More detailed lists of words can be found here and here.

Here are some ideas based on the ad with the kid throwing a tantrum in a supermarket (seen in Consuming Kids). While watching Consuming Kids students noted key phrases and academic vocabulary on "leaves" which were then posted on our tree for reference in class discussions and writing tasks. It's a great way to role-model note-taking and keep students engaged. It also gives an easy way to revise previous lessons. Problem: the words aren't big enough for students to read easily from their seats. |
